Have you every wondered who your students admire and look up to? Does who they respect have any influence on their own values and beliefs? Are these characteristics demonstrated within the classroom (or online) setting? Well... good news... there is a technique that you, as an instructor, can use to find this out. The technique is called "Profiles of Admirable Individuals" and it is a tool used to assess learners values and self-awareness. The technique was developed by Thomas A. Angelo and K. Patricia Cross in their book entitled Classroom Assessment Techniques: A Handbook for College Teachers.
The link below is a six (6) minute PowerPoint video clip that I prepared in my PIPD3230 course (Evaluation Techniques) that explains step-by-step how the process works, along with its pros and cons for both the student and the instructor. The exercise is a great vehicle to allow faculty to understand the images and values that their students associate with best practice, as well as allowing students the opportunity to self-reflect on their own values and appreciate the values and beliefs of others.
